The first step in planning a Hawaiian themed wedding is choosing the perfect location. When you think about Hawaii you picture lush outdoor landscapes full of tropical beauty. Depending on your location, this may seem like a big obstacle, but not if you think outside of the box. Check with local golf courses, parks, and if you are lucky enough to live in an area that has a beach, that is even better. The wedding attire can be really fun with a Hawaiian themed wedding. Think floral prints, bright colors, and aloha shirts. As for the bridesmaids, floral print dresses work beautifully. When deciding on the attire, do not be afraid of bright beautiful colors. With a Hawaiian theme, they work wonderfully. If you want to add even more Hawaiian accents, consider leis. Brightly colored leis will defiantly add a Hawaiian feel to the ceremony. If you have enough money in your wedding budget, you could even have a lei for all of your guests.

Planning the reception of a Hawaiian themed wedding can be extremely fun. Choosing to skip the traditional formal reception and going with a luau places everyone in party mood. To decorate the luau use a lot of fresh flowers. Orchids, anthuriums and gingers are all great choices. Luau tables can easily be decorated with loose flowers, or you may even want to cut some of the leis and tie them end to end, to create a beautiful table runner. Fresh tropical fruit such as pineapple also fits nicely with the Hawaiian theme, and are both budget friendly and available year round. Another way to decorate your reception is by using brightly colored fabric, with or without Hawaiian print, and sea shells. The possibilities are endless.

Food for the reception can also have a more relaxed feel. Many traditional luaus involve a roasted pig, along with several other dishes. If you are a little worried about what to prepare, you may want to look for a caterer who specializes in Hawaiian or tropical cuisine. Tropical drinks also add more character to your celebration.

If you really want to get into the Hawaiian feel, and are not afraid to be bold, why not hire a group of hula dancers and fire dancers. This will definitely be a hit. You could even have extra hula skirts available for your guests if they would like use them.

Choosing to go with a Hawaiian theme for your wedding day can be both fun and relaxing. The possibilities for decorating and entertaining are endless, and can be accomplished on both large and small budgets. The engagement party should take place fairly soon after he pops the question. Usually somewhere between one and four months. If you hold it fairly soon after the engagement becomes official, this gala can be when the announcement is officially made to your extended circle of family and friends. The bride-to-be will definitely want to get a pretty new dress for her engagement party, no matter how formal or informal it may be. One: Booking vendors before you have done your homework. Many a bride has rushed out and booked the hottest reception site in town only to later learn that a) her church is not available on that date or b) it is way too small to fit all of the guests. Before you put down a penny with any vendor, be sure that you know all of the basics, such as the number of guests on both sides of the family, the date your church is available, and the general style of wedding you would like to have.

Two: Ordering your wedding gown too small as “motivation” or buying a too-small dress because it is a good deal. Oh please, please do not do this to yourself! The last thing any woman needs before her wedding is the added stress of having to try to change her body to fit into a dress. It is far better to buy your gown in your current size and then change the gown to fit you, should you slim down. And that way if you don’t lose any weight, at least you won’t have to lose any sleep wondering how on earth you are going to squeeze into your dress on the wedding day. It seems like a lot of brides also forget that their fiances loved them just the way they were when they asked them to get married, “perfect” or not.

Three: Biting off more than you can chew. Fancy yourself the next Martha Stewart? Keep in mind that even the great Martha has a staff to help her execute all of those fabulous craft projects. In other words, one woman cannot make everything for her wedding and also keep her sanity. Some things to scratch off the list: taking a course in jewelry making so you can handcraft the bridesmaid gifts (just pick out pretty bridesmaid jewelry in a store), making chocolate truffles for the wedding favors, and embroidering your own veil. Keep your expectations realistic and limit yourself to one or two projects that you know you can manage, such as printing invitations or learning enough calligraphy to write out the place cards.

Four: Not getting enough postage. The chances are very slim that your wedding invitation takes the same amount of postage as your phone bill. Take one of your invitations (with all of the enclosures) to the post office to have it weighed and determine the correct postage. Better still, take all of your invitations and hand cancel them after putting on the stamps. It looks much prettier than a commercial machine cancel and will not crush any ornaments like bows that you may have in your envelopes.

Five: Obsessing over perfection. I guarantee you that something will go wrong at your wedding, no matter how meticulously you plan. For instance at my wedding, the priest knocked over one of the floral displays on the altar during the ceremony and I dropped part of a stuffed mushroom on the bodice of my custom gown. So what? It was a great day anyway, and at some point you just have to let go of fussing over everything and simply enjoy your wedding.

Six: Leaving things to the last minute. The day before (or Heaven forbid, the morning of) your wedding is no time to be cranking out programs, writing place cards, or wrapping favors. Have all of these things done at least five days before your wedding so you do not lose beauty sleep over them on your wedding eve.

Seven: Last, but certainly not least, blowing your budget. It is all to easy to get swept away in the moment and decide to splurge on things in order to bring your dream wedding to life. However, all of those little splurges can quickly add up into a mountain of debt. Don’t start out your married life in a hole: decide on your budget early on and vow to stick to it. It may not be easy along the way, but when all is said and done, you will be very happy that you kept your promise to yourself.

Leave the majestic tiara at home. In the absence of a long veil and a train, this would look pretty silly. Most beach brides make do without a veil on a beach because of the probability of sudden breeze. Please don’t ask why the train is out of the question.

Beach brides make up for the absence of a veil by wearing flowers on their hair or using a beautiful headpiece. Opt for a very simple tiara that does not clash with your less formal wedding dress. A birdcage veil can be accented by a solitary white flower.

Look bejeweled enough but not too embellished, unless the wedding revolves around the holiday tree theme. The beach bride would look ridiculous wearing chandelier earrings, a multi-strand pearl necklace and bangles. It not only looks distracting (and funny), it looks cluttered too. An ultra sparkling tiara paired with an equally sparkling and embellished neckpiece may appear as much too much.

Jewelry should adhere to the style of the dress, too. A halter top dress would appear awkward when paired with a necklace. Try accessorizing with longish earrings instead. A strapless dress works best with chokers and Y-drop necklaces. A low back dress can be accentuated with a lariat necklace dangling in the back. Anything with asymmetric shoulder can be very difficult to wear a necklace with, so this can be skipped altogether. A scoop neckline looks good with almost all necklace types.

We can go two ways with a simple beach wedding dress. We can either match this with a simple necklace and teardrop earrings or we can wear a chunky necklace made of gemstones or a grand filigree design. In my experience, a beach wedding dress in all its sequined and beaded glory does not work well with chunky or beaded neckpieces.

As for earrings, pairing them with necklaces depends on the grandeur of the necklace. Use simpler earrings with large and chunky neckpieces. The beach bride shouldn’t appear as if she is trying to carry a pretty heavy load up her ears and neck.

In place of the more popular pearls and diamonds, semi-precious stones, wood, metal and other elements are also becoming likely choices for beach wedding jewelry. Other beach brides even don actual seashells in their headpieces and charm necklaces. Jewelry inspired by leaves, vines or flowers goes well with the beach wedding theme.

Some beach brides even leave out all accessories and jewelry altogether. On a beach wedding, the more natural you look the better. The key is to not overpower the simplicity of the wedding dress or defeat the natural sparkle of the beach wedding location.

Stay away from the store bought notecards emblazoned with “Thank You” across the front. They are decidedly uninspired and show no original thought. You want your thank you notes to express your true gratitude, as well as show off your personal style. This means getting creative, and designing your own cards.

People love personalized cards. A great idea for a wedding thank you card is to have notecards or even postcards made with a picture of the newlyweds. You can choose one of your favorite wedding photos or perhaps your favorite snapshot from your honeymoon. They can be printed in a glossy modern style, or an old fashioned colorized black and white if your wedding had a vintage style. If you really want to make your notecards personal, think about printing out a different picture for each one, like a picture of the newlyweds with the people to whom the note is addressed. It is a simple enough project to slip the picture into a photo pocket card or to glue it to a pretty piece of stationery stock to make your own cards. This little diy project will end up being the best thank you note your guests have ever received.

For those who love monograms, you can very easily create your own monogrammed thank you notes for your wedding. All you need to do is order an embosser with your monogram on it. Using the embosser to press your monogram onto a plain ready made notecard is so easy that even the groom won’t mind doing it. The end result will be very chic and stylish.

Lovely pressed flowers can also be used to craft creative and expressive thank you cards for your wedding. All you do is take pressed dried flowers and use a matte medium or glue to adhere them to a pretty notecard. Pansies work particularly well for this project. Choose a heavy cardstock that will take the weight of the flowers. If this feels like too large a task for your wedding guest list, think about doing it for your bridal shower gifts instead.

It is really fun to handcraft thank you notes that tie in with the theme of your wedding. For instance, if you had a Tiffany blue wedding, it would be so cute to get blank Tiffany blue notecards and glue two pieces of white satin ribbon on them like the ribbon on a gift box. The notes will be refreshingly creative, yet very simple to assemble. If you had a destination wedding, have your favorite image of the location printed on notecards as a special thank you note. The possibilities are endless.

Don’t forget to put as much thought into the message as the thank you cards themselves. Mention not only the specific gift, but anything else your guest did to help make your wedding special, whether it was picking up your relatives at the airport, helping you to find the perfect bridesmaid gifts, or just lending moral support.
