When it comes to choosing your wedding undergarments, function has to take priority. No doubt when you envision bridal lingerie, the first picture that comes to mind is something white, lacy, and romantic. However, in many cases, those types of undergarments are not the ones that are needed to create the best possible fit for the wedding gown. Remember that you can always choose special romantic lingerie to wear on the wedding night and the honeymoon; don’t worry if the foundation under your gown is more utilitarian than beautiful.

Obviously a regular bra with straps cannot be worn under a strapless bridal gown. Some brides can get away with a standard strapless bra, as long as the back of the gown cuts straight across, with little or no dip in the back. Look for a strapless bra which has a silicone grip strip along the edges to help keep it from slipping down. Many an active dancer has found her strapless bra down around her waist at some point during the evening, so when in doubt, choose a bustier or long line bra instead of a basic strapless.

Most brides will choose to wear a bustier or long line bra under a strapless wedding dress. Because they go to the waist, there is no chance that they will slip around or fall down. There are a variety of materials and cuts available, some of which work wonderfully, and some of which are just terrible. Be very careful when selecting a bustier for your gown, as you want it not only fit well, but also to be well concealed under your dress. If your gown has heavy embellishment or a lot of lace on the bodice, you may be able to get away with a lacy bustier, but in many cases, the lace will show through as bumps under the gown.

Speaking of bumps, take care that the boning of your undergarments does not show through when you are in your wedding dress. Some of the more costly bustiers do a good job of concealing the boning under a smooth layer of fabric for a seamless look. These bras are usually not at all pretty, but they tend to be the most practical. Color is another consideration; match the bustier to the color of your skin, not the color of your bridal gown.

Choosing the right undergarments for the lower half of a strapless gown is usually easier. Many will have built in petticoats, which means that you can get away with underwear that is as fancy as you like. If you plan to wear stockings, choose alluring garters with stockings over unattractive pantyhose. You can really have fun decorating the garters and your undies with details like pearls or crystals to match your bridal jewelry. This will make for a very special look on the wedding night when you wear little more than your lingerie and bridal jewelry. And remember that if you have to choose something practical to disappear under your gown (no v.p.l., please!), you can always pick up something more romantic to wear in the honeymoon suite!

Duchess satin, peau de soie, or silk satin: these terms are often used interchangeably. They are all silk fabrics woven to have a sheen on one side. This is a very luxurious fabric, and it is frequently used to create formal ballgowns. You would accessorize a silk satin gown with very elaborate wedding jewelry.

Italian satin: this is likely a silk blend, or a synthetic trying to sound more expensive than it is. It will also have a sheen like silk satin, but the drape will be stiffer. If a gown is labeled as satin, without the word silk, then assume it is a synthetic like polyester. (Be forewarned: polyester does not breathe like a natural fiber – it is hot!) The price tag will also give you a hint – it is very difficult to find a silk bridal gown for under $1000.

Crepe: a pebbly-textured fabric with a matte finish. Crepe is loved for its’ fluid drape, and works best in slim silhouettes. Available in silk or synthetic.

Organza: a crisp plain weave fabric that is translucent. Organza is a very popular material as an overlayer for summer gowns. It is also created from silk or polyester.

Chiffon: another translucent fabric, but it has a soft drape instead of the crisp hand of organza. Like organza, chiffon is considered a summer-weight fabric.

Linen: a natural fiber woven from flax, linen is definitely reserved for summer. It starts out crisp, but will quickly acquire the “relaxed” (a.k.a. wrinkled) look that linen is known for. Linen is a great choice for an informal wedding gown, and would be lovely dressed up with simple pearl wedding jewelry.

Silk mikado: a twill weave fabric with a fairly stiff hand, mikado is a wonderful choice for modern, architectural gowns. It is less shiny than satin, and less matte than crepe. Mikado also wrinkles less than silk satin.

Silk shantung and silk dupioni: these two fabrics are best known for their slubby texture. Shantung is lighter weight than dupioni, and has less pronounced slubs. Both work well for structured gowns, but shantung can also be draped on the bias for a much softer effect. They have a minimal sheen.

Taffeta: a crisp fabric without shine. Silk taffeta can be used to create full, but lightweight gowns. It is also loved (or hated) for its’ characteristic rustling sound.

These are just a few of the special fabrics that designers use to create bridal gowns. More unusual choices include English net, silk piqué, and velvet. Your gown may also be embellished with various laces, ribbons, and trims. With so many amazing fabrics available, every bride is sure to find a wedding gown that feels like it was made just for her.

The months before a wedding can be loaded with potential dietary pitfalls. There are engagement parties (around 100 calories per glass of Champagne), bridal showers with cakes and pastries, food tasting sessions with the caterer and baker, bachelorette parties (600 calories in a big frozen margarita!), not to mention meals eaten on the run. If you happen to be a stress eater, too, you can suddenly find your wedding dress getting tighter and tighter at each fitting. So what is a bride to do?

Knowledge is half the battle. Once you become aware of all of the extra calories that are lurking in your celebrations, you can plan ahead. No one is suggesting that an engaged couple should not enjoy their pre-wedding parties, but if you want your dress to fit, a little caution is a good idea. When going to a party, eat a filling dinner first, and stay away from the appetizers, cheese plates, and tiny desserts at the party. It can be easy to eat way too many of those tasty little treats; each one is so small that it can be hard to realize how quickly they add up. If there is no time for dinner, eat a lowfat protein bar or a bowl of yogurt mixed with a high fiber cereal before you hit the party.

Alcohol is the biggest diet killer in more ways than one. First of all, it is loaded with empty calories. Secondly, after a few drinks, it is easy to lose control over your snacking in a way that you would not if sober. If you are at an engagement party with lots of Champagne toasts, remember that etiquette says that the person being toasted should only raise their glass; you do not actually drink to yourself. Once you realize that you don’t have to drink along with every toast, you can nurse one or two glasses of Champagne all evening long. As for those wild and crazy bachelorette parties with the margaritas, try a light beer or a glass of white wine instead to cut the calories in each drink down to 100 or less from 600 or so for the big frozen cocktail.

For those brides who like to reward themselves with food, find an alternative indulgence when you are looking for a little pick-me-up. A piece of jewelry from your favorite bridal jewelry set is not going to put weight on your hips like an ice cream sundae. Anything that makes you feel beautiful is good, whether it is bridal jewelry, a makeover, a manicure, or some sexy new lingerie for the honeymoon. Stay away from the kind of treats that you will regret later. Keep your wedding goals in mind to help keep temptation at bay.

And finally, remember to eat a sensible and well balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, protein, and fiber to keep you feeling satisfied. Crash diets are dangerous, and they do not work in the long run. It is much better to get on a good path of healthy eating that will keep you and your new hubby feeling healthy and happy for all the years of your marriage.

1. Too much makeup—yes, the wedding is a big celebration but try not to make your face as grand as the excitement. Less is more.

2. Stuck on trends—okay, unless you’ve been asleep for the past few years, you know that glitter is big. But 5 years from now you want to look at photos that have a timeless, classic and neutral face. Don’t date your photos with super shine! Go with matte, neutrals.

3. Makeup that isn’t you—If you never wear a stitch of makeup, don’t walk down the aisle or show up at a party looking like you lost a fight with a Drag Queen. Look like you, only fresher.

4. Look-a-likes—gone are the days when bridesmaids all resemble big matching rosettes atop a cake. Let your wedding party keep their individuality and wear looks that suit them. Don’t give everyone bright purple eye-paint to match the purple dresses. Work with a range of harmonizing colour families.

5. Forcing the unwilling—classic are the Moms of brides and grooms who go “under the brush” to please the bride, only to be upset that lipstick feels funny on their usually bare lips. Don’t force anyone to be made up for your event; you’ll create needless stress for yourself also.

6. Changing routines—too many brides rush out and get facials, tans and teeth whitening a week before the wedding. Skin erupts, gums flare up, and tans can peel off like wallpaper the morning of the nuptials. Stick with your regular skincare, eat well, exercise, have lots of water and sleep, and less caffeine.

7. Forgetting supplies—any makeup artist who tells you your face will last the whole day of your big party with NO touch-ups is selling a dream. You will need blotting papers or powder to control face shine before photos, lipstick to reapply and maybe sealer to prep for all those celebration kisses, a little liner or eye shadow to refresh after tears, and always waterproof mascara.

8. Wrong look—many people take pictures out of magazines and request a look that doesn’t suit them or is too sultry for their Victorian theme (the smokey eye and the pale JLo lip are common requests.) Match your look to the feel of the event and to suit your face.

9. Over-dew!—I haven’t met a bride who didn’t want a “dewey” shining cheek. The challenge is that it can look greasy in photos. Stick with a little highlighting on cheekbones or eyes, but not whole face.

10. Gloss crazy—leave the gloss for calmer events. Big events mean you kiss a lot and dance like mad. You end up with your flying hair stuck to you, and your mouth stuck to everyone else. Keep lips creamy or matte.

Firstly, you are unlikely to ever find vintage wedding favors! So it is up to you to create your own. The easiest way to do this is through color choices and decorations. For the favors themselves I would choose simple items such as candles or miniature photograph frames. For favors with vintage style but a contemporary twist have cookies or mini cakes made with vintage style in terms of shape and decoration. Look to the 1940′s and 50′s for inspiration in terms of graphics and colors.

For color choices use muted shades of pink, cream, blue and green. Stay away from very bold colors such as shocking pink or fluorescent and for metallics use antique gold, silver, bronze and copper. Antique means that a coat of black or some form of oxidizing has been applied to the metal to highlight details in black giving the appearance of something that is old.

Packaging your favors is one of the easiest ways of achieving a vintage look. Choose card boxes, silk or satin bags and even aluminum tins. For decorations you can use things like beads, buttons and scraps of paper or fabric from a vintage source.

Check out boot sales, charity shops and websites like eBay and Etsy for vintage beads and beautiful mother of pearl buttons, all of which can often be bought in larger quantities fairly inexpensively. These websites are also good places to pick up rolls of vintage wallpaper, or pieces of vintage fabric.

You could make scented sachets from vintage fabric and decorate them with a large bead or button sewn through the center. Or why not use vintage wallpaper to create tags, labels or even paper bags/envelopes for your favors?

You could also make vintage style packaging from cartridge or parchment style papers and stamp them with vintage style motifs.
