Well Meaning Wedding Advice Creates Disastrous Wedding Photography

If you are paying attention to what is going on in the wedding industry, everywhere you look these days people are writing stories about budget weddings. How to Have a Wedding on a Shoe String, The Recession Wedding Planning Guide, story after story about cutting the costs.
Although it is essential to not go into great debt over a wedding, I am seeing evidence of these recession brides, living with some regrets.
Many of the articles and discussions on cutting the cost of your wedding offer advice such as “Don’t hire a band, or a DJ, use an iPod instead.”
I do believe with the right amplification, the sound of the iPod is extremely good. On the other hand, one thing the iPod cannot do is keep things flowing and that is one function that the band or DJ will do. The music flows from dinner to dancing. There is awareness, of the progression of the evening and anticipation and timing when it comes to slowing things down or keeping the energy high.
The music and how it is played, not just what is being played is what keeps the party going, or causes it to be a dud.

The other thing that all of these articles and discussions want the bride and groom to cut is the photography. They all seem to say the same thing “Get a friend or family member to take the photos, everyone has a digital camera these days”.
People never seem to realize how important good photography is at a once in a lifetime event until after the fact. The wedding photographs are some of the most cherished possessions a couple can have. That is a pretty big responsibility to place on your family and guests.
What these advisers are not taking into consideration is the enormous attention that goes into capturing a wedding day.
Light changes throughout the day and if you do not understand light and how to work with it, the results can be disastrous. I photograph a lot of beach weddings and if you are not matching the light on the faces of the bride and groom to the light that falls on the water behind them, then their faces will be too dark.
There are details everywhere that a trained eye will not miss, such as the way the train of the dress is laid out, miss this one and it will always bother the bride when ever she looks back at her photos.
The use of different lenses can bring the feeling of that special moment, and connect it to your heart, where as a normal lens could leave the moment flat, with no emotional connection what so ever. The power of the lens is not in everyone’s consciousness.
A wedding day is a part of family history. A professional photographer is aware of this and will not miss the opportunity to capture images of family members that will soon bring enormous gratitude to the couple as individuals pass on. Photographers look for the opportunity to catch a grandfather and grandmother is a joyful moment as they dance at their granddaughter’s wedding, or the insight to gather multiple generations together, and capture them all together forever. I have been told many times by the newlyweds how much the images of loved ones are now cherished more than ever since that person is no longer with them.

I believe one of the most important aspects that are overlooked by asking a guest to capture the images at a wedding, is the fact that they are a guest. As a guest, they will be enjoying the wedding right along with all of the other guests. A guest who is enjoying the party will miss a lot of image opportunities and the bride and groom will not even notice until after the event. I have also heard of instances were this has created animosity between the wedding couple and the guest who volunteered to be the photographer, when things went wrong
Finally, what some do not understand, is that for a professional photographer, the real work comes after the actual capture. An event such as a wedding will have many aspects to photograph and consequently a lot of images to edit, color correct, sort and all of the other things that prepare the images for a quality viewing experience.
Yes it is a fact that a lot people planning weddings require cutting back right now, but it is my feeling that all of these people passing out advice on how to cut the cost of the wedding should report with a little more responsibility. A couple planning a wedding usually has never done this before, and are taking their advice.
I know first hand, up close and personal, that these wedding cost cutting bloggers and article writers are making an impact on the way people are planning their weddings. I also am aware that brides and grooms who are following this advice are finding disappointment at the end of the day.
