Your wedding is your chance to let your imagination run wild! Why plan an ordinary event when you can create an extraordinary fantasy world for one day? These are some inspirational ideas for over-the-top wedding themes.

There is no reason why you have to play it safe when it comes to the design and theme of your wedding. After all, your wedding will probably be the most fantastic party that you ever throw, so make the most of it and design an unforgettable event that will blow your guests away. This is the perfect chance to indulge your passion for theater or your love of an historical era or your favorite hobby.

One of the most fabulous wedding themes is a grand masquerade ball. You can take the theme even further and make it a Venetian masquerade. This is a wonderful theme for an evening wedding, especially on New Year’s Eve. Choose a palette of rich jewel tones like emerald green, royal purple, and peacock blue. These colors can be used throughout the wedding to create an incredible ambiance.

The bride, of course, will want to wear a truly spectacular full ballgown with ornate custom bridal jewelry, such as a wide crystal choker and chandelier earrings. Naturally your guests will need to be a part of the fun. The invitations should indicate that it is a masquerade ball wedding, and you can have beautiful handmade masks to pass out to each guest for the reception (some of the masks are so stunning that they are truly works of art); this would be a terrific wedding favor, as well.

If your taste runs to the fun and whimsical, a circus theme could be perfect for your wedding. It can be done in such a way that it is lighthearted without being childish. Start with a striped tent for your “big top”. Bright primary colors like red, yellow, and blue are ideal for the table linens and chair covers. Set up stations with favorite circus treats like cotton candy, popcorn, and sno-cones for after dinner. If your budget allows, the newlyweds can even make their entrance to the reception on an elephant. Just be sure to leave out the clowns; you wouldn’t want to bring on an anxiety attack in any of the guests!

The Renaissance is another wedding theme that can be done in a big way. It would start with a custom period style dress and bridal jewelry for the bride. The bridesmaid dresses can be rentals or have them custom made (don’t expect your attendants to foot the bill for a custom period style dress, though; this would be something the bride should pay for). Flowing loose hair with floral and ivy wreaths will look very pretty on the bride and her bridesmaids. Strolling minstrels and mandolin music will add a festive touch of authenticity to your Renaissance wedding. Decorate your space with items such as heavy goblets, cast iron candle holders, and even banners bearing your family coat-of-arms (real or invented).

A shimmering under-the-sea theme is one more over-the-top idea for your wedding. Forget any image that you have of this theme for a high school prom. It is entirely possible to do an under-the-sea wedding that is both elegant and festive. The color palette should consist of shimmering and iridescent sea green, lavender, and grey-blue. Lighting is very important to creating the right atmosphere, so definitely plan to hire a lighting specialist to cast an underwater glow with colored lights and twinkling white lights. For your centerpieces, it would be very unique to create a vignette designed around a fishbowl with vivid tropical live fish. Other decor ideas include faux coral, sand, and seashells.

If you really want to make a splash, then a larger-than-life wedding theme is the way to do it. You can be creative and put together a totally unique show for your guests. A fun and festive party is the perfect celebration for your marriage.
